Hyderabad: NASA is preparing for Artemis III, a mission planned for 2027 that will test key technologies needed for future crewed lunar landings. Unlike an actual Moon landing mission, Artemis III will send four astronauts into low Earth orbit aboard the Orion spacecraft for approximately 14 days. The crew comprises NASA astronauts Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio and Andre Douglas, along with European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano. They will practise rendezvous and docking procedures with test versions of Blue Origin’s Blue Moon lander and SpaceX’s Starship system.

According to NASA’s mission plan, Blue Origin will first launch its Blue Moon test vehicle into orbit. Orion will subsequently launch aboard the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

After docking with Blue Moon, the astronauts will examine its cabin, controls and life-support systems. The mission will also include a separate docking demonstration involving SpaceX’s Starship test vehicle, focusing on spacecraft interfaces, communications and software.

Additional activities will assess spacesuits, docking sensors, temperature conditions and crew safety procedures. Orion is expected to return to Earth with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

The mission is designed to reduce risks and build operational experience ahead of the planned Artemis IV lunar landing mission in 2028.
