Government Tightens Scrutiny of TV News Channels Over Provocative Debates and AI Use

New Delhi: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory directing television news channels to exercise stricter editorial control over provocative debates, offensive language and sensational reporting.

The advisory calls on broadcasters to carefully select and brief panellists to prevent the broadcast of abusive, indecent or inflammatory remarks. Where necessary, channels should immediately mute objectionable comments, issue disclaimers, interrupt discussions or cut the broadcast feed.

The ministry has also urged broadcasters to exercise caution when using artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, for graphics and virtual news presentations.

The advisory reiterates restrictions on live coverage of anti-terror operations. Until such operations conclude, reporting should be limited to information provided periodically by authorised officers.

News channels have also been advised to avoid sensationalising crime and violence, exercise discretion when showing disturbing visuals and refrain from repeatedly broadcasting or looping such footage. Reports concerning natural disasters and major accidents should be based on verified information. Broadcasters must also protect the identities of sexual offence survivors, including by avoiding indirect details that could reveal their identities.

The ministry has raised concerns about alleged violations of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, and the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994. It has urged channels to strengthen their editorial oversight and review procedures to ensure compliance with the programme code.
