Patna: The Bihar Transport Department has reduced the penalty calculation period for vehicles operating without valid permits from 30 days to seven days, offering relief to vehicle owners. The order, issued by the State Transport Commissioner’s office, directs all District Transport Officers (DTOs) to implement the revised rules.

Previously, officials calculated penalties based on up to 30 days of unauthorised vehicle operation. Following requests from vehicle owners seeking relief from high penalties, the department reduced the maximum calculation period to seven days. The revised instructions also apply to cases where penalties exceeding seven days have already been imposed.

However, the statutory penalty of ₹10,000 under the Motor Vehicles Act for both first and subsequent offences remains unchanged. Only the period used to calculate the penalty has been reduced.

Vehicle owners must pay the applicable amount and submit payment receipts to the State Transport Authority to obtain pending permits. Authorities have been instructed to ensure compliance with permit requirements and other provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
