Patna High Court Rebukes Civic, Police Authorities Over Safety

Brief By Newsbrief / 1:19 PM on 07 Oct 2026

The Patna High Court has expressed strong displeasure over alleged lapses in public safety, sanitation and civic facilities in the city. Hearing a petition filed by the Patna District Reform Committee, Justice Rajiv Roy highlighted concerns over crime, drug activity, open drinking, poor lighting and inadequate maintenance of public parks.

An affidavit from the Kadamkuan police station reportedly recorded 22 cases between January 1 and July 31, 2026, including three chain-snatching cases, three vehicle theft cases, eight NDPS Act cases and eight excise-law cases.

The court directed authorities to prepare a comprehensive plan for 24x7 CCTV surveillance and adequate street lighting around Vaishali Golambar. It also raised concerns over open toilets, encroachments, waste and unauthorised structures near parks.

The court summoned senior municipal and police officials, including the Chief Town Engineer and concerned executive officers, for the next hearing. The matter will be heard again on October 9, 2026.
