Nishant Opposes Renewal of Farakka Treaty, Cites Bihar’s Interests

Bihar Health Minister Nishant Kumar has strongly opposed the renewal of the Farakka Water Sharing Treaty between India and Bangladesh, saying the agreement is not in Bihar’s interest. He said the state’s concerns have been clearly conveyed to the Centre and stressed that Bihar must receive its rightful share of Ganga water.

Nishant said Bihar’s interests should be given top priority if the treaty is renewed. He argued that adequate water availability is essential for drinking water, irrigation, industries and other requirements in the state.

The 1996 India-Bangladesh Farakka Treaty established arrangements for sharing Ganga waters through the Farakka Barrage and was signed for 30 years. With its term approaching expiry, discussions over its future and possible renewal have gained importance.

Bihar has repeatedly raised concerns over the Farakka Barrage, particularly its impact on Ganga water flow and flooding. Nishant said any future agreement must adequately protect Bihar’s interests and ensure equitable access to the river’s water resources.
