Patna-Muzaffarpur Rapid Rail May Cut Journey Time to Under 1 Hour

Brief By Newsbrief / 11:00 AM on 04 Oct 2026

The proposed Patna-Muzaffarpur Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) could reduce travel time between the two Bihar cities to less than an hour, with trains potentially reaching speeds of 160 kmph. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has begun preparing an Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) and Detailed Project Report (DPR) to assess the proposed corridor’s feasibility.

The route is planned via Hajipur and Muzaffarpur, with studies examining passenger demand, travel patterns, station locations, construction costs and operational requirements. The project could significantly improve regional connectivity and make daily travel faster and more convenient for commuters.

A final journey time will depend on factors including station spacing, alignment, operating speeds and the number of stops. The proposed corridor could also improve access to educational institutions, employment opportunities and other facilities, while supporting economic activity across Patna, Hajipur and Muzaffarpur further.
