Bihar to Benefit from Four-Track Expansion of Key Rail Corridor

Bihar will benefit from the Centre’s decision to strengthen seven high-density corridors by increasing their capacity to four tracks. The Kolkata-Delhi corridor passes through Bihar and is among those targeted for expansion.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the seven corridors span nearly 11,000 kilometres and handle around 40% of Indian Railways’ traffic. About 2,000 kilometres have four-track capacity, while work is underway or approved on another 5,000 kilometres.

Additional tracks on the Kolkata-Delhi route are expected to ease pressure, improve operational flexibility and facilitate movement of passenger trains and freight services. Eastern and central Bihar could particularly benefit from the improved connectivity and increased capacity.

The Cabinet also approved three multi-tracking projects across 14 districts in five states, adding 656 kilometres at a cost of ₹10,783 crore. Five more projects across four states will add 540 kilometres, costing ₹10,021 crore, with completion targeted by 2029-30 under the approved railway programme.
