Bihar Flood Crisis Deepens as Rivers Rise

Bihar is facing a worsening flood situation as water levels in the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Burhi Gandak and Sone rivers continue to rise, inundating several areas. Heavy rainfall and flooding in Nepal have also increased pressure on rivers flowing into the state.

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary reviewed the situation through the Water Resources Department’s Command and Control Centre, assessing river levels and reports of breaches and cracks in embankments. He directed officials and engineers to remain on 24-hour alert and stay deployed on embankments.

Bhagalpur remains among the worst-affected areas, with several embankment breaches and erosion reported following the rising Ganga. Water Resources Department teams are using steamers and mega geobags to strengthen stretches and control erosion.

Chaudhary warned that the flood season could continue until early October, making the next one-and-a-half months challenging for the government and department.
