Bihar Targets One Lakh Driving Licences Monthly From October

Bihar’s Transport Department is set to significantly expand driving licence testing capacity from October, targeting the issuance of around one lakh licences every month, double the current figure of nearly 50,000.

The department plans to increase test slots across all 38 districts and has directed District Transport Officers (DTOs) and Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs) to conduct tests according to a prescribed schedule. Under the proposed system, applicants are expected to receive driving test dates within 24 hours of completing the application process.

Officials are reviewing district-wise testing capacity and available slots based on local demand. Districts with lower capacity may see a 30% to 50% increase in available slots, while higher-capacity districts will also be assessed.

At present, testing capacity varies widely across Bihar. Patna and Purnia reportedly have around 200 slots each, while several smaller districts have fewer.

The expansion is aimed at reducing waiting periods, improving transparency and making the licence process faster and more convenient for applicants.
