Man swept away in Ganga at Vaishali ghat

A man was swept away by the strong current of the Ganga near Sultanpur Kali Ghat in Vaishali district’s Desari area. Umesh Pandit reportedly lost his balance while washing his hands and feet after using the riverbank. Despite attempts by locals to rescue him, he was carried away by the fast-flowing water.

Following the incident, local residents and an administrative team launched a search operation, which remains underway. The incident has triggered anger among villagers, who questioned the administration’s preparedness amid rising water levels and dangerous currents.

Residents alleged that sensitive ghats lacked adequate security personnel, rescue teams, equipment and effective monitoring. Mahnar SDM said boat operations are prohibited at night for safety reasons. However, locals questioned the absence of alternative emergency rescue arrangements.

The incident has renewed concerns over safety measures at Ganga ghats, including barricading, warning signs, trained rescue personnel and emergency response systems during periods of rising water levels.
