Bankipur Bypoll Set for High-Stakes BJP-PK Showdown

Brief By Newsbrief / 9:06 AM on 04 Jul 2026

Patna: The upcoming by-election for Patna's Bankipur Assembly constituency has emerged as one of Bihar's most closely watched political contests. The seat fell vacant after BJP leader Nitin Nabin resigned following his appointment as the party's national president. The Election Commission has scheduled polling for July 30, while votes will be counted on August 3.

Bankipur has remained a BJP stronghold for nearly four decades, making the bypoll a major prestige battle for the ruling party. Political observers believe a defeat would be a significant setback for both the BJP organization and the NDA government.

Meanwhile, Jan Suraj founder Prashant Kishor is considering contesting the election, with the party's core committee expected to decide on July 5. If he enters the race, the contest is expected to become a high-profile BJP-versus-Jan Suraj showdown. BJP is yet to announce its candidate, while nominations close on July 13.
