Bihar to Reintroduce Toll Tax on State Highways, Bridges Under New Road User Fee Policy

Patna: The Bihar government has approved the Bihar Road User Fee Policy-2026, paving the way for the return of toll collection on state highways and major bridges after nearly eight years. The new policy, cleared by the state cabinet, reverses the 2018 decision that abolished toll charges on state roads and government-owned bridges. Under the revised framework, cars, jeeps and vans will be charged ₹1.25 per kilometre, while commercial vehicles, buses and heavy trucks will pay higher rates based on vehicle category. Toll collection will be carried out through FASTag and other digital payment systems. The government said the policy is intended to generate more than ₹500 crore annually for road maintenance, infrastructure development and improved transport facilities. Rural roads have been exempted from the new fee structure. Authorities plan to appoint toll collection agencies within three months of issuing the official notification, after which the new charges will come into effect across the state.
