Monsoon's First Rain Wreaks Havoc in Himachal Pradesh: Waterlogging, Landslides and Floods Disrupt Normal Life

The first spell of monsoon rain has caused widespread disruption across Himachal Pradesh. Heavy rainfall triggered waterlogging, landslides, floods, and road blockages in several districts, including Una, Mandi, Kangra, Lahaul-Spiti, Shimla, and Sirmaur. At Government Primary School Bahadala in Una, rainwater entered the school campus and classrooms, creating difficulties for students and teachers on the first day after the summer vacation. Friends Colony in Una was also submerged after just one and a half hours of rainfall, with nearly two feet of water accumulating due to a blocked drainage system. In Mandi district, a woman from Nalagarh lost her life near the Shani Temple at Aut after being struck by a rock that fell from a hillside. She had stepped out of a bus after feeling nauseous when the accident occurred. Landslides have also forced the closure of 28 roads in the district. In Shimla's Rampur area, an temporary bridge was washed away, cutting off three panchayats from the rest of the region. Meanwhile, flood-like conditions on the Manali-Leh Highway near Jispa and Zingzing Bar stranded hundreds of tourists as overflowing streams, fed by melting glaciers, continued to swell. In Kangra district, a major retaining wall collapsed at Tanda Medical College, posing a serious threat to doctors' residential quarters. In Sirmaur district, heavy rainfall disrupted power supply after 44 electricity transformers in Paonta Sahib and Rajgarh stopped functioning. Authorities have urged residents and travelers to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions improve.
