Bihar Tightens Driving Licence Rules, Mandates Formal Training

The Bihar government is preparing to introduce mandatory formal training for all applicants seeking a Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) driving licence, aiming to improve road safety and reduce accidents. The proposal received approval during a meeting of the Bihar Road Safety Council, chaired by Transport Minister Santosh Kumar Singh.

Officials said the Bihar Motor Vehicles Rules will be amended to implement the new requirement. Under the proposed system, applicants must complete training at recognised driving institutes before becoming eligible for an LMV licence.

The council emphasized that structured training will help create more responsible and skilled drivers while strengthening road safety standards across the state. Representatives from multiple departments, including Transport, Road Construction, Education, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), participated in the discussions.

According to officials, Bihar currently has 41 operational driving training schools, while approval has been granted for 66 institutes. Construction of 25 additional centres is underway to support the proposed licensing reforms.
