A historic achievement has emerged for the traditional and cultural products of Jharkhand. Eleven distinct products from the state have been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, giving these traditional crafts a major identity at the national level. With the special support of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the state's famous Bhagaiya Silk, Kuchai Silk, Munda Jewelry, and Jharkhand Bamboo Craft have secured this prestigious tag. To achieve this proud milestone, NABARD collaborated with producer groups, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), and government departments, ensuring the state's rich cultural heritage is showcased to the world.
Beyond silk and craftsmanship, this list also includes several other unique regional products and delicacies. The products that received the GI tag include Koderma's Kesaria Kalakand, Dumka's Dhokra Craft, Chandar Badoni Puppets, Tussar Silk and Sarees, Jadupatua Painting, Panchi Saree, and Jharkhand Benam Handicraft. NABARD played a crucial role in identifying the unique characteristics of these products and organizing local artisans throughout the process. Following this recognition, the authenticity of these traditional products will be safeguarded, the sale of counterfeit products in the market will be curbed, and local producers will receive fair and better prices for their hard work.
Specifically, the recognition given to Munda Jewelry honors the cultural heritage and artistic traditions of the Munda tribe, while the Jharkhand Bamboo Craft highlights the creativity and skill of rural artisans. Deepmala Ghosh, Chief General Manager of NABARD Jharkhand, called it a proud moment for the state, stating that the GI tag not only increases commercial value but also encourages the younger generation to adopt traditional crafts. NABARD is continuously working to provide market access for these products through exhibitions, rural haats, and Saras Melas, which will open new opportunities for branding, exports, and tourism promotion in the future.
