Bihar is witnessing severe heat stress as soaring humidity pushes the heat index far above actual temperature readings, making conditions feel significantly hotter across the state. In Patna, the maximum temperature was recorded at around 41.5°C, but meteorologists said the heat index, which factors in humidity, reached much higher levels.
Weather experts have urged residents to pay attention to the heat index rather than temperature alone, warning that excessive moisture in the air reduces the body’s ability to cool itself through sweating. As a result, people may experience greater discomfort, dehydration, and heat-related illnesses even when temperatures appear manageable.
The Meteorological Centre has started including heat index data in its weather updates to provide a more accurate picture of outdoor conditions. Authorities have advised people to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and take extra precautions, especially for children, senior citizens, and outdoor workers.
