Katihar Municipal Corporation has intensified its anti-encroachment campaign, carrying out a major demolition drive in the city’s busy Mirchaibari area. Backed by heavy police deployment, officials used bulldozers to remove illegal structures, roadside stalls and unauthorized occupations on government land that had narrowed roads and worsened traffic congestion.
According to Municipal Commissioner Santosh Kumar, the action followed repeated warnings and legal notices issued to encroachers. However, when occupants failed to remove the structures within the prescribed deadline, the administration proceeded with demolition. The operation was conducted peacefully under strict security arrangements, with police personnel deployed throughout the area to maintain law and order.
Authorities said the objective is to make Katihar cleaner, more organized and free from chronic traffic jams. The civic body has made it clear that the campaign will continue in other identified locations across the city. While encroachers expressed concern, many residents welcomed the initiative as a necessary step toward improving urban infrastructure and easing daily commuting challenges.
