The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a major infrastructure project to upgrade the 143.529-kilometre Khagaria–Purnia stretch of National Highways 31 and 231 into a four-lane corridor at a cost of ₹3,936.05 crore. The project will be developed under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model and is expected to significantly improve road connectivity across Bihar’s Kosi and Seemanchal regions.
Welcoming the decision, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary described it as a landmark step for the state's development. He said the upgraded highway will reduce travel time, improve passenger and freight movement, and strengthen links between key economic centres.
The project is also expected to boost trade, agriculture, tourism and industrial activity by enabling faster transportation of goods and people. Officials believe the highway expansion will create employment opportunities, enhance regional connectivity and contribute to long-term socio-economic growth across eastern Bihar.
