Bihar Govt Warns Doctors: Strict Action for Absenteeism and Unnecessary Referrals

The Bihar government has launched stricter accountability measures for doctors in state-run hospitals, warning of firm action against absenteeism, late attendance, and unnecessary patient referrals. The health department has made biometric attendance and roster-based duty monitoring mandatory to ensure doctors remain available and accountable during working hours.

Under the new guidelines, doctors will be required to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), avoid unnecessary referrals, and provide treatment at government facilities whenever possible. Digital monitoring systems will also be introduced to track attendance, hospital administration, and patient care more efficiently.

The government said the initiative is aimed at improving healthcare delivery, reducing inconvenience for patients, and strengthening public trust in government hospitals. Senior officials have reportedly instructed district administrations to ensure strict compliance.

Meanwhile, doctors’ associations have raised concerns over working conditions and demanded better security, administrative support, and facilities, especially for those posted in hospitals during night shifts and emergency duties.
