The Bihar government has announced a major administrative overhaul by abolishing the separate cadre of the Vigilance Investigation Bureau, integrating its officers directly into the Bihar Police Service. Under the new order, DSPs, police inspectors, and sub-inspectors previously serving under the independent vigilance cadre will now be treated as part of the regular state police structure.
According to the government, the decision has been taken under the Bihar Police Act, 2007 to bring greater uniformity, coordination, and administrative efficiency within the policing system. Officials clarified that officers’ service records, seniority, promotions, and experience will remain protected, with no adverse impact on their careers.
The move comes at a time when vigilance agencies have intensified anti-corruption actions against officials and public servants, prompting political debate over the bureau’s future independence. While the government insists anti-corruption operations, investigations, and trap cases will continue unaffected, critics argue the merger could reduce institutional autonomy and increase administrative control over the agency.
