Vikramshila Bridge Crisis: Cargo Ships Deployed After Road Link Collapse Disrupts Seemanchal

Brief By Newsbrief / 12:21 PM on 08 May 2026

The damage to Bihar’s Vikramshila Setu has severely disrupted road connectivity between Bhagalpur, Naugachia and the larger Seemanchal region, creating major difficulties for commuters, traders and transporters. With vehicular movement on the bridge completely suspended, daily life and commercial activities have been badly affected. Residents are currently relying on boats and small ferries to cross the Ganga River, while transportation of four-wheelers and essential goods has nearly come to a halt.

In response to the crisis, the district administration has initiated emergency measures to restore connectivity. Acting on the directions of the Bhagalpur District Magistrate, four cargo vessels have been brought from Kolkata to operate between Tintanga Karari Ghat and Kahalgaon Ghat. Officials said the vessels can transport between 10 and 24 vehicles in a single trip, offering temporary relief for movement of goods and vehicles.

Representatives from Kolkata-based Shark Shipping Company, along with local officials, inspected the riverbanks and operational conditions before launching the service.
