Bihar Weather Shock: IMD Issues Lightning Warning After Record 206% Rainfall Surge

Bihar has witnessed an extraordinary weather pattern this May, recording 206% excess rainfall over normal levels, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The sudden surge in rainfall has brought significant relief from intense summer heat across the state, with temperatures dropping in several districts over the past few days.

However, the IMD has now issued a fresh warning predicting thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and possible hailstorms in Patna and many other districts during the next five days. Officials said rapidly changing atmospheric conditions could lead to localized damage, disruption in transportation and risks to crops in vulnerable rural areas.

Authorities have advised people to avoid open fields, trees and water bodies during lightning activity while urging farmers to remain alert. Disaster management teams have also been placed on standby in sensitive districts. Weather experts believe the unusual rainfall pattern may continue intermittently, making this one of Bihar’s most unpredictable pre-monsoon seasons in recent years.
