The Bihar government has approved the development of two greenfield airports in Sonepur and Sultanganj, marking a significant push to strengthen regional connectivity and accelerate economic growth. The projects are expected to reduce congestion at Patna airport while improving access to eastern Bihar, including key religious and tourism destinations.

Spread across more than 7,200 acres, the airports will be developed with modern infrastructure, including a long runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft. The state has initiated funding and land acquisition processes, with compensation packages already cleared for affected areas.

Officials stated that these projects will enhance trade, tourism, and employment opportunities, positioning Bihar as a stronger player in India’s aviation network. With a target completion timeline of 2030, the initiative reflects the government’s long-term vision for infrastructure expansion and balanced regional development across the state.
