India and Nepal have agreed on a comprehensive plan to strengthen flood management and resolve long-standing issues in the Kosi and Gandak river systems ahead of the 2026 monsoon. The two sides decided to remove encroachments near embankments, improve canal operations, and enhance water flow efficiency to minimize flood risks. Key measures include anti-erosion projects in vulnerable zones, repair of drainage bottlenecks, and coordinated monitoring using satellite data and real-time updates.
Both countries will also adopt GPS-based mapping to resolve land-related disputes transparently and prevent future conflicts. Structural and non-structural interventions, including pilot flood channels and improved forecasting systems, are part of the strategy. Officials emphasized closer coordination between local authorities to ensure timely execution. The agreement reflects a joint commitment to reducing disaster impact, protecting livelihoods, and ensuring smoother river management across shared border regions.
