Power Crisis Looms? Patna’s Electricity Demand Surges to 812 MW, Set to Smash Records

Brief By Newsbrief / 2:15 PM on 29 Apr 2026

Patna is witnessing a sharp rise in electricity demand as soaring temperatures and rapid urbanisation push consumption levels close to record highs. The city’s peak load has already touched 812 MW and is expected to surpass last year’s record of 883 MW, with officials warning that demand could even cross 1,000 MW this summer.

The surge is largely driven by increased use of air conditioners, coolers, and fans, along with a growing number of residential complexes, malls, and commercial establishments. Peak consumption hours, especially between 9 pm and midnight, are putting significant pressure on the power supply system.

To manage the rising load, the Patna Electric Supply Undertaking (PESU) has strengthened monitoring systems and deployed additional teams to respond quickly to outages. Authorities are also focusing on maintaining infrastructure stability to ensure uninterrupted supply during the intense summer months ahead.
