Game-Changer on Ganga! Bihar Plans Floating Jetties at Key Ghats to Transform River Travel Safety

Brief By Newsbrief / 10:09 AM on 28 Apr 2026

In a major step to improve river transport safety, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has announced plans to install modern floating jetties at four key Ganga ghats in Bhagalpur—Sultanganj, Aguwani, Kahalgaon, and Teentanga. These floating platforms will remain anchored to the riverbank while adjusting automatically to changing water levels, ensuring safer and smoother boarding for passengers.

Currently, the lack of proper infrastructure at these ghats makes boarding boats risky, with frequent incidents of slips and falls. The new jetties will allow vessels to dock directly alongside, significantly enhancing passenger safety and convenience. Along with this, authorities plan to upgrade facilities by adding waiting shelters, drinking water services, and solar lighting for better visibility at night.

The initiative is expected to benefit farmers, traders, and daily commuters who rely heavily on river crossings, making travel more organized, accessible, and secure.
