Bihar’s TOD Power Tariff Sparks Debate Over Cost and Consumer Impact

The introduction of the Time-of-Day (TOD) electricity tariff in Bihar has sparked widespread debate over its impact on consumers. While the power distribution company claims the move is aimed at benefiting users and aligns with national policies, critics argue it could increase the financial burden on households.

Under the new system, electricity will be cheaper during off-peak hours from 9 AM to 5 PM, while rates will rise significantly during peak hours between 5 PM and 11 PM, when most households consume the most power. Standard rates will apply overnight. Officials maintain that consumers can reduce bills by shifting usage patterns and leveraging smart meters.

However, experts point out that for many families, especially those dependent on evening electricity usage, adjusting consumption may not be practical. The policy has also taken on political significance, with opposition voices calling it an added burden, while the government defends it as a reform aimed at efficient energy management.
