Bihar Electricity Tariff Revised, Urban Consumers Likely to Benefit

Brief By Newsbrief / 9:54 AM on 19 Mar 2026

The Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) has announced revised electricity tariffs, effective April 1, 2026, bringing relief primarily to urban domestic consumers. The new structure merges earlier consumption slabs and reduces effective rates, leading to lower monthly bills for many households. Officials stated that smart prepaid meter users could save up to Rs 660 per month, depending on usage and continuation of existing government subsidies.

BERC Chairman Amir Subhani noted that the revised tariff aims to simplify billing and reduce financial burden without increasing base rates. While urban domestic users are expected to benefit significantly, rural consumers will see comparatively limited changes, with effective rates adjusted through subsidies. Additionally, fixed charges for certain categories have been reduced, further easing costs.

The new tariff order will remain valid until March 31, 2027, and is expected to benefit around 2.7 lakh consumers across Bihar.
