Nepal Rains Trigger Flooding in Bihar’s Kishanganj, Bridges Washed Away

Brief By Newsbrief / 10:03 AM on 14 Mar 2026

Unseasonal rainfall in neighbouring Nepal has triggered sudden flooding in parts of Bihar’s Kishanganj district, causing the Kankai River to swell and wash away several temporary bamboo bridges near the India–Nepal border. The sudden rise in water levels disrupted daily life in multiple areas, particularly in the Dighalbank block, where residents reported damage to key crossing points used for transport and access to nearby towns.

Officials said strong currents swept away bamboo bridges at Palsa, Mandirtola and Balwadangi, along with a crossing at Kanchanbari Ghat in Lohagara panchayat. As a result, several villages including Palsa, Mandirtola, Dakupura, Baijnath Tola and Taltola have been temporarily cut off from the mainland.

Residents say the disruption has made it difficult to reach schools, markets and healthcare facilities. The rising water levels have also affected an ongoing bridge construction project at Kanchanbari Ghat after the diversion route was damaged by the strong river current.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as intermittent rainfall continues in the region.
