Bihar is set to get its largest greenfield airport near Sonepur, close to the Gandak River, marking a major push in aviation infrastructure. The proposed airport will feature two 4,200-metre-long runways, making it capable of handling wide-body aircraft, including the Airbus A380. Officials said the project site lies between Hajipur and Dumaripar, with land acquisition already sanctioned by the state government.
The Sonepur Greenfield Airport is expected to significantly reduce congestion at Patna airport and improve air connectivity across north and eastern Bihar. Sources in the civil aviation department indicated that formal construction announcements could follow soon, possibly after cabinet-level approvals.
Once operational, the airport will rank among India’s largest, positioning Bihar alongside major aviation hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Improved road and bridge connectivity, including new links over the Ganga, is also planned to support seamless access. Officials believe the project will boost investment, tourism, employment and long-term regional economic growth.
