The Bihar government has intensified efforts to revive the long-defunct Sasamusa sugar mill in Gopalganj, raising hopes for thousands of sugarcane farmers across the region. Senior officials recently reviewed the project’s progress, focusing on resolving administrative, technical, and financial hurdles that have delayed reopening for years. Karnataka-based Nirani Sugars has formally expressed interest, signalling potential private sector participation in the revival plan.
Chief Secretary-level discussions have directed concerned departments to complete procedural formalities within fixed timelines and improve coordination among agencies. Industry and energy department officials presented updates on preparatory steps, with emphasis on creating a viable, time-bound action plan to restart operations.
Once operational, the Sasamusa mill is expected to significantly reduce farmers’ dependence on distant sugar factories, cutting transportation costs and ensuring quicker payments for produce. The revival is also projected to generate local employment and stimulate allied agro-based industries. Officials said further review meetings will be held to monitor progress and ensure deadlines are met, positioning the project as a key component of Bihar’s rural industrial push.
