The debate over renaming Patna as Pataliputra has resurfaced after Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) chief Upendra Kushwaha raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha. Kushwaha said the name change would honour Bihar’s ancient legacy, recalling Pataliputra’s status as the capital of the Maurya Empire and a historic centre of governance, learning and culture. He argued that renaming the city would help restore Bihar’s historical dignity and national identity, similar to earlier renamings such as Calcutta to Kolkata and Allahabad to Prayagraj.
Experts, however, estimate that renaming Patna could cost over Rs 300 crore, covering changes to railway stations, signage, official records and government documents. As per procedure, the proposal would require approval from the state cabinet, legislature, and the Union government, along with no-objection certificates from multiple central departments. Political analysts say the demand also carries electoral and symbolic significance.
