Bihar Government Expands Crèche Facilities to Support Working Mothers

The Bihar Government has intensified efforts to support working mothers by expanding crèche facilities across government offices. Under the Chief Minister’s Women Empowerment Scheme, 155 childcare centres are currently operational, with 33 more set to open soon. These crèches cater to children up to five years of age and are aimed at making workplaces safer and more inclusive for women employees.

The facilities have been established across key government locations, including the state secretariat, major departments such as Social Welfare, Panchayati Raj, Labour and Employment, the Police Headquarters, the Legislative Assembly and Council, and even select central jails. The initiative has reached almost the entire state, covering district collectorates in 37 of Bihar’s 38 districts, with expansion planned for remaining areas.

Each crèche receives a one-time grant of ₹5.36 lakh for infrastructure and around ₹3.16 lakh annually for operational expenses, with staff hired on contract. While the programme marks a significant step toward workplace equality, officials acknowledge the need to address infrastructure gaps to ensure safe, child-friendly environments across all centres.
