The Union Budget has proposed a transformative Varanasi–Siliguri high-speed rail corridor that will pass through Bihar, with key stoppages planned at Patna and Katihar. Railway officials said the project aims to sharply reduce travel time between Varanasi and Siliguri to under three hours, significantly improving passenger convenience. The corridor is part of the Centre’s broader push to modernise India’s rail network and strengthen inter-regional connectivity, especially between eastern India and the Northeast.
The project is expected to benefit multiple districts in Bihar by improving access to markets, education, healthcare and employment opportunities. Enhanced freight movement could also support local industries and trade. Officials added that the corridor aligns with ongoing investments in railway infrastructure, including new lines, station upgrades and safety improvements. Once completed, the high-speed rail link is likely to boost tourism, accelerate economic growth and position Bihar as a key transit hub in eastern India’s transport network.
