India on January 30 observed Martyrs’ Day, remembering Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary and paying tribute to his ideals of truth, non-violence and self-reliance. From political leaders to ordinary citizens, the nation reflected on Gandhi’s sacrifice and relevance in today’s turbulent world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a message on social media, said Gandhi’s emphasis on swadeshi laid the foundation for a developed and self-reliant India. He added that Gandhi’s life and values continue to inspire citizens to walk the path of duty and moral responsibility. In another message, the Prime Minister highlighted the power of non-violence, calling it a force capable of transforming the world without weapons.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage, saying Gandhi united a diverse nation by transcending divisions of language, region and caste. He said Gandhi’s ideas on freedom, cleanliness and self-rule continue to guide India’s politics and policymaking.
Tributes were not limited to the national capital. In Bihar’s Ara, people gathered at RK Sadar Hospital premises for a peace and harmony programme, offering floral tributes and recalling Gandhi’s role in shaking the foundations of imperialism through non-violent resistance.
