Political tension escalated in Bihar’s Sheohar district as protests erupted against the University Grants Commission’s Equity Regulations under the UGC Act 2026. Following similar demonstrations across the country, students and members of the so-called upper-caste community took to the streets, expressing strong opposition to the immediate implementation of the new rules in universities and colleges.
Organisations including the Karni Sena, Parshuram Sena and other groups led a large rally through the town, which intensified at Zero Mile Chowk. Protesters burned an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, beat metal plates and raised slogans against the Centre, turning the area into a charged protest site.
Leaders of the Swarna Samaj described the UGC regulations as anti-social and demanded their immediate withdrawal. Former Lok Sabha candidate Rana Ranjit Singh termed the law a “black law,” alleging it would disrupt both the education system and social balance. He warned that the agitation would continue “from the streets to Parliament” until the regulation is repealed.
