The mysterious death of a NEET aspirant from Jehanabad in Patna has once again come under sharp focus after the Patna High Court rejected the bail plea of the accused, Manish Ranjan. While the bail rejection has kept the case in the spotlight, it has also intensified concerns over the police investigation and systemic lapses.
The incident occurred at Shambhu Girls’ Hostel, but serious questions remain over the police’s conduct between January 6 and 9. Despite the victim’s critical condition and the sensitive nature of the case, the hostel room was not sealed for three days, raising fears of possible evidence tampering. The victim’s family has alleged that police failed to act promptly, ignored repeated pleas, and only became active after the case gained media and political attention.
Police have claimed that a formal complaint was not filed immediately, but critics argue that law enforcement is empowered to take suo motu cognisance in such serious cases. Allegations have also surfaced against the local police station in-charge, who continues to be part of the investigation, further deepening mistrust. The case has now become a larger debate on accountability, transparency, and the efficiency of the criminal justice system.
