Janata Dal (United) legislator Anant Singh’s bail plea is likely to come up for hearing before the Patna High Court this week, a development that could determine when he formally assumes office as an MLA. Singh, who won the recent Assembly election, has not yet taken the oath as he remains in judicial custody in connection with a poll-related murder case. His legal team has indicated that the oath-taking will take place only after bail is granted and his release is secured.
Singh moved the High Court after a lower court rejected his bail application. The petition was filed on December 24 and is listed before Justice Ashok Kumar Pandey, though a specific hearing date is yet to be confirmed. His counsel has maintained that all legal formalities have been completed and expressed confidence in a favourable order.
The case relates to a violent clash during the election campaign in which Durlabh Yadav, associated with a rival party, was killed. Police have claimed Singh was present at the scene, an allegation the defence has strongly denied, calling the charges false and politically motivated.
