Bihar Police is set to significantly strengthen its criminal investigation framework by expanding forensic infrastructure across the state. The government has approved the establishment of nine new forensic science laboratories to ensure faster, more scientific, and evidence-based investigations. Officials said the initiative aims to improve conviction rates in serious crimes and reduce delays caused by limited forensic capacity.
Currently, forensic teams are able to visit only a small fraction of crime scenes despite tens of thousands of serious cases being registered annually. The new laboratories will enable quicker access to forensic services, timely evidence collection, and better preservation of crime scene materials. Police headquarters has directed officials to expedite construction and operational readiness, with some labs expected to become functional within months.
The expansion also aligns with new criminal laws mandating forensic examination in serious offences carrying severe punishment. Authorities believe this step will enhance transparency, strengthen prosecutions, and build greater public trust in law enforcement while modernising Bihar’s criminal justice system.
