Bihar Cracks Down on Modified Sleeper Buses, Permits at Risk

Bihar Transport Minister Shrawon Kumar has ordered a strict crackdown on the operation and modification of sleeper buses across the state, warning that permits of non-compliant vehicles will be revoked immediately. The directive follows inspections that revealed several buses registered as seater vehicles were illegally operating in sleeper configurations, violating Central Motor Vehicles Rules and prescribed safety standards.

The minister highlighted serious safety concerns, particularly on overnight inter-state routes, citing risks such as overcrowding, blocked emergency exits, and fire hazards. He said sleeper buses must comply with mandatory norms, including certified body structures, fire-resistant materials, proper berth dimensions, emergency exits, and fire detection systems.

Under the revised enforcement, only recognised automobile manufacturers or government-approved factories will be allowed to produce sleeper buses, while unauthorised local bodybuilders will be barred. Action will also be taken against transport officials and operators found responsible for violations. The measures aim to enhance passenger safety following recent fire-related incidents involving sleeper buses in the state.
