Bihar Moves to Regulate Auto, E-Rickshaw Operations

Brief By Newsbrief / 9:02 AM on 11 Jan 2026

The Bihar government has initiated steps to strictly regulate auto and e-rickshaw operations across the state to curb arbitrary practices and improve traffic management. The Bihar Transport Department has issued detailed guidelines to all district magistrates and divisional commissioners. Under the new framework, district-level committees chaired by district magistrates will determine the number of autos and e-rickshaws permitted on specific city roads and finalise their routes. Oversight committees led by divisional commissioners will monitor implementation and compliance.

To ensure easy route identification and enforcement, vehicles will be assigned colour codes such as red, yellow, blue, and green based on approved routes. Operators will be required to run their vehicles strictly on designated routes, with violations inviting action. Officials said the move aims to ease congestion, enhance passenger safety, and bring greater discipline to urban transport systems. The directives have been circulated statewide and are expected to be implemented in phases.
