Bihar Plans First Semiconductor Plant, Eyes Ganga–Kosi Belt for Chip Hub

Brief By Newsbrief / 8:43 AM on 07 Jan 2026

Bihar has taken a significant step toward entering India’s semiconductor manufacturing landscape by initiating plans to set up its first chip fabrication plant. The state government has approved the proposal in principle and identified districts along the Ganga and Kosi river belt as preferred locations, citing the sector’s heavy requirements for uninterrupted water and power supply.

Industries Minister Dilip Jaiswal said groundwork would begin soon, with the proposal to be forwarded to the Centre for approval under the India Semiconductor Mission. Officials noted that districts including Patna, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Samastipur, Vaishali, Saran, Bhojpur, Buxar, Munger, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Katihar, Saharsa and Supaul are being evaluated for infrastructure readiness, water access and industrial connectivity.

The move aligns with the state’s broader push to attract high-tech investment and develop an advanced manufacturing ecosystem. If approved, the project could mark Bihar’s entry into strategic chip production, creating jobs and strengthening India’s semiconductor supply chain critical for electronics, electric vehicles and defence technologies.
