Government Unveils Major Senior Citizen Welfare Update

Brief By Newsbrief / 2:09 PM on 04 Jan 2026

The government has announced a major welfare update aimed at improving the quality of life for senior citizens, recognising their lifelong contribution to society. Central to the initiative is the introduction of a new Senior Citizen Card, which will function as more than just an identity document. The card will serve as a single gateway to multiple government benefits, linking healthcare, travel, pension and banking services. Designed for convenience, it will be available through both online and offline modes, reducing the need for elderly citizens to visit multiple offices.

Healthcare has been given top priority under the new update. Citizens aged 60 and above will be eligible for free medical treatment, along with access to telemedicine services and mobile health units, particularly in rural and remote areas. To ease mobility, the government has also announced travel concessions of 30 to 50 percent on rail, bus and air journeys. Additional assistance will be provided for religious pilgrimages, ensuring dignified and secure living for senior citizens.
