Brief By Newsbrief / 4:07 PM on 05 Oct 2026

Thieves stole jewellery worth an estimated ₹20–25 lakh from the residence of stationery businessman Ashok Modi in Dumka’s Sarai Road area. Modi was in Kolkata visiting his son when the burglary took place, while his elder son and other family members were sleeping in nearby rooms.

The incident came to light in the morning when Modi’s elder son tried to open his father’s locked room. After attempts, the door was forced open, revealing a ransacked room and three steel almirahs broken open. The family said ancestral jewellery kept inside the cupboards was missing.

Police found the window grille removed, suggesting the thieves entered through the window. Dumka Sadar SDPO Dilip Khalko inspected the scene and said investigators are examining CCTV footage and statements from family members. Police said the exact value of the stolen jewellery has not yet been confirmed.
