ChatGPT’s New Emoji Trick Could Change How It Talks to You

Brief By Newsbrief / 11:15 AM on 22 Sep 2026

ChatGPT is reportedly testing a new reaction feature that allows the AI to respond to user messages with emojis based on the conversation’s context and tone. The feature can reportedly select reactions such as laughter, celebration or supportive responses, adding a more visual element to conversations.

Unlike traditional ChatGPT replies, these emoji reactions appear separately from the main text response and are intended to complement, rather than replace, written answers.

The feature was reportedly suggested by a user on OpenAI’s community forum, with the proposal calling for ChatGPT to react to messages in a way similar to messaging and social-media platforms. The suggestion also included giving users control over whether reactions are enabled.

OpenAI Support acknowledged the proposal and said the request would be shared with the relevant team, although no specific rollout date was announced.

The reaction feature appears to be reaching some users gradually, with no indication of a universal rollout yet.
