Land Rover to End Discovery Sport Production After 11 Years as SUV Reaches End of Its Lifecycle

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has confirmed that production of the Land Rover Discovery Sport will officially end in December 2026, bringing the SUV's 11-year production run to a close. The company described the decision as part of the model's natural product lifecycle, following a steady decline in demand over recent years.
Although the Discovery Sport remains available for purchase in several markets, JLR has already stopped accepting factory orders in a number of European countries, including France, Germany, and Spain. According to reports, production has already been phased out in some regions as the company prepares to retire the model.
The Discovery Sport was launched in 2015 as the successor to the Freelander and quickly became one of JLR's biggest success stories. During its first full year on sale, it emerged as the brand's best-selling vehicle, with approximately 122,000 units sold in 2016. The SUV received a significant facelift in 2020, featuring an updated platform, refreshed interior, and improved technology.
Despite the update, sales continued to decline. By 2025, annual sales had fallen to roughly one-tenth of their 2016 peak, making the Discovery Sport one of the slowest-selling models in JLR's lineup.
Apart from declining demand, stricter European Union General Safety Regulation 2 (GSR2) requirements have also influenced the decision. The updated regulations mandate several advanced safety technologies that are not available on the Discovery Sport in its current form. Upgrading the aging model to meet the latest standards is reportedly not considered commercially viable.
While the Discovery Sport is set to be discontinued, JLR is expected to continue offering models such as the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Velar. Reports also suggest that the larger Land Rover Discovery could face a similar phase-out as it approaches the end of its product lifecycle.
