India’s star shuttler and two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu bowed out of the China Open 2026 after suffering a narrow three-game defeat against China’s Chen Yufei in the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals on Thursday.

Playing in Changzhou, Sindhu made an impressive start by claiming the opening game 21-16 with aggressive shot-making and solid court coverage. She looked set to seal the match in straight games after building a 20-16 lead in the second game, needing just one point to secure victory.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically as Chen Yufei displayed remarkable composure under pressure. The Chinese star saved four consecutive match points before edging the second game 22-20, forcing the contest into a deciding game.

The final game was another closely contested battle. Sindhu held an 11-8 advantage at the mid-game interval, but Chen gradually fought back with consistent defense, accurate smashes, and long rallies backed by strong home support. The world No. 4 maintained her composure in the closing stages to clinch the decider 21-18, ending Sindhu’s campaign after an intense 89-minute encounter.

The match also served as a rematch of last week’s Japan Open semi-final, where Chen Yufei had retired due to injury, allowing Sindhu to progress to the final. This time, the Chinese player returned fully fit and successfully avenged that defeat.

Former India coach Vimal Kumar praised the contest, describing it as one of the finest badminton matches in recent years. He highlighted the exceptional rallies, tactical brilliance, and fighting spirit displayed by both players, adding that Sindhu was unfortunate to lose after coming so close to victory. Despite the defeat, the Indian star's performance reflected her determination and ability to compete with the world's best players.
