UP’s Dussehri & Langra Mangoes Sail to Dubai in First-Ever Sea Shipment, Boosting Farmers’ Income

In a major boost for India's horticulture exports, Uttar Pradesh's famous Dussehri and Langra mangoes have reached Dubai through the country's first-ever commercial sea shipment from the state. A total of 12.5 tonnes of mangoes were transported in a 40-foot refrigerated container, marking a significant milestone in expanding India's agricultural exports to international markets.
Traditionally, fresh mango exports have relied on air freight, which significantly increases transportation costs. By opting for sea transport, exporters have been able to reduce logistics expenses while maintaining product quality. The shipment was dispatched from Amroha and successfully arrived at Dubai's Al Aweer Fruit and Vegetable Market after a journey of approximately 25 days.
The initiative was supported by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and the ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (ICAR-CISH). The mangoes were processed and packed at a modern packing facility in Amroha using the METWASH technology developed by ICAR-CISH to enhance shelf life and preserve fruit quality during long-distance transportation.
Despite the extended sea voyage and varying weather conditions, around 90 percent of the shipment reached Dubai in market-ready condition. The consignment was supplied to the Lulu Group, one of the leading retail chains in the United Arab Emirates.
Officials said the lower transportation cost enabled farmers to receive an additional ₹15 to ₹20 per kilogram for their produce compared to conventional export methods. The successful sea shipment is expected to create new opportunities for Indian mangoes across Gulf countries and other international markets.
Experts believe this achievement could make Indian fruits more competitive globally by reducing export costs, increasing farmers' earnings, and strengthening the international presence of India's premium horticultural products.
