RIMS-2 Construction Continues Despite ST Commission's Stop-Work Directive

Ranchi: Construction of the proposed RIMS-2 hospital in Ranchi has continued despite the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) directing authorities to halt work until the completion of its hearing on the land acquisition issue. The development has triggered a political controversy in Jharkhand, with the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the BJP taking opposing positions. JMM spokesperson Manoj Pandey accused the commission of exceeding its jurisdiction and obstructing development projects, arguing that Ranchi urgently needs the new hospital. In contrast, BJP spokesperson Sandeep Verma said the commission's directive should be strictly followed until a final decision is taken. He suggested considering an alternative site instead of acquiring fertile agricultural land. The NCST has sought a detailed report on the acquisition of 222 acres proposed for the project, including compensation paid to landowners. The commission clarified that it supports the hospital project but believes an alternative location should be explored to protect tribal and agricultural land.
