A dramatic incident unfolded at the Sirka open-cast coal mine in Ramgarh on Sunday evening when a massive volume of water suddenly burst into the excavation area, rapidly flooding large sections of the mine. The incident triggered panic among officials and workers, although no casualties were reported. Fortunately, mining operations were already suspended due to the weekend, and several vehicles and machines had been moved to safe locations beforehand.
According to project officer A.N. Singh, preliminary findings suggest that mining activities may have breached a gallery of an abandoned underground mine, allowing accumulated water to rush into the open-cast pit. Following the incident, authorities immediately evacuated workers and secured equipment. Coal production has been temporarily suspended while emergency pumping operations continue at full scale. Officials have intensified monitoring of the site and stated that mining activities will resume only after complete water removal and a comprehensive safety assessment.
